The challenge of managing for quality whitetails has become a passion with the Whisnant family. Serving to occupy hours of dinner table conversation and the occasional disagreement. We believe in a 3 fold management plan involving high quality, high protein natural forage, adequate mineral supplementation, and finally, appropriate age structure.
A great deal of effort and pride goes into the yearly planting of food plots at Rain Crow. Summer plantings include corn, lab lab, soybean, and alfalfa. While fall plantings include various clovers, wheat and Mossey Oak's Biologic. Over 150-acres are cultivated into 40 or more food plots at various locations.
In addition to these forages, supplemental feed is added January through September. This 18% hi pro Purina deer feed is offered free choice from various one-ton feeders. These feeders are discontinued around the first of September to allow hunting in a natural setting and due to our ample acorn crop.
The final supplement to be provided to the deer is mineral. We keep established mineral licks furnished with Whitetail Institute's 30-06 to provide the calcium and phosphorus necessary for quality horn growth.
Perhaps our most important management tool has simply been time. Allowing the deer time to reach maturity. The high fence has done this in a way that would otherwise be impossible.
